13. (England) (DUCAREL, Andrew Coltee). The History and
Antiquities of the Parish of Lambeth, In the County of Surrey…
London: J. Nichol, 1786. First edition. From the library of
Johannis Poynder, with his annotations. No. XXXIX in “Bibliotheca
Topographica Britannica”. 4to., full contemporary navy morocco, raised
bands, gilt compartments, elaborate gilt and blind-stamped borders on
the covers, inner dentelles gilt, rebacked with spine laid down,
corners reinforced, vii, 128, 164pp. Frontispiece and one plate have
been cropped and mounted on bound-in leaves, bookplates partially
removed, boards rubbed, very light wear to extremities, but still very
good, attractive copy. Ducarel (1713-1785) was a librarian and
antiquary who held the position of librarian at Lambeth for
twenty-eight years. This copy belonged to lawyer and noted book
collector Johannis Poynder (1779?-1849), and contains a partial
bookplate and his signed annotation of provenance which reads, “I
bought this book at the sale of my valued friend W. Heseltine’s books,
who long occupied the ancient house of the Tradscants in South Lambeth
(Turret House) of whom so much occurs in the following work of Dr.
Ducarel whose autograph I have been enabled to insert, in a letter to
the celebrated Mr. Granger.” The letter mentioned is tipped in before
the first blank. To “Sir” (Rev’d Wm. Granger), from “And. Coltee
Ducarel” Drs Commons June 7 1773, 2pp 4to. Thanking Granger for his
letter, which was shown to the Archbishop, and for information
regarding a copy of Matthew Parker’s De antiquitate Britannicæ
ecclesiae held at the Lambeth library. Ducarel compared an engraving
in the volume with a painting, and information from Granger seems to
have established the provenance of one of the items but without
context the language makes it unclear. Poynder’s annotations appear
throughout the text—nearly twenty instances, mostly in pencil, ranging
from lengthy commentary to a few simple marks and lines. They are of a
personal nature, referencing people or places he was familiar with as
they appear in the text, sometimes clarifying names or mentioning the
personal connection. Poynder was known for his evangelical activism,
having published multiple works including A Serious Address to the
Public on the Present Times, opposing the East India Company’s policy
of religious toleration in India, and proposed admission of Roman
Catholics to political office. His extraordinary library was sold by
Sotheby’s over three days, and included many volumes with autographs
or letters.

A NOTORIOUS LONDON COURTEZAN
|
|
|
28. (PHILLIPS, Teresia Constantia). The Happy Courtezan: Or, the
Prude demolish'd. An Epistle From the Celebrated Mrs. C_____ P____, To
The Angelick Signior Far--n--li.
London: Printed for J. Roberts, ...1735. First edition. Folio,
disbound and put in 19th century stiff paper covers, (4), 16pp. With
the half-title. Slight foxing to half-title and title but otherwise a
near fine copy. A bawdy poem, attributed to Teresia Phillips, a
notorious London courtezan, who denied authorship and claimed the
verse was perpetrated by friends of her ex-husband, Henry Muliman, in
order to discredit her. Despite her denial, this poem and another
similar verse ,Counter-Apology (1749), were both circulated widely and "represent her as having a voracious sexual appetite." In The Happy
Courtezan, the author "celebrates the love of the castrato singer
Farinelli and also satirizes the "current vogue for Italian opera..."
Foxon H42. Constantia Phillips [1709-1765] seems to have begun her
career as a courtezan at the age of 12 or 13 becoming involved with
the future Lord Chesterfield. In order to avoid arrest for debt in
1722 she married a Mr. Devall, a bigamist. Then in 1723, she married a
Dutch merchant, Henry Muliman who when he learned of her "sordid"
past, obtained an annulment, which led to years of court battles,
interspersed with a succession of affairs. Muliman did agree to provide
her with an annuity, which was discontinued when she began to cohabit
with a "Mr. B" in Paris. Phillips, having traveled to England and the
West Indies, then "determined to blackmail her friends by publishing
An Apology for the Conduct of Mrs. Teresia Constantia Phillips. The
memoirs "which are written with a good deal of dramatic effect" went
through several editions. Through it all, she was repeatedly
imprisoned for debt and finally managed to bribe her way out of the
country, sailing for Jamaica, where she married a "Mr. M." . She
"inveigled him to leaving her the whole of his fortune, and having
buried him, married a Scot, upon whose death she obtained a further
increase of her resources." She died in 1765, leaving her husband, a
Frenchman named Lanteniac.

information which came to me through the Juvenile Protective

FOUNDER OF THE
AMERICAN RED CROSS
|
|
|
39. (Science - Medicine) BARTON, Clara. A Story of the Red
Cross. Glimpses of Field Work.
New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1904. First edition. From the library
of Dr. C.B. Farrar with his name on the endpaper and his notes in pen
on the rear endpaper. 8vo., original beige cloth stamped in red, with
the red cross symbol in a white circular background on the upper
board, viii, 199pp. A fine, bright copy. Farrar’s notes at the rear
document the conflict between Barton and the medical profession,
relating remarks made by Osler at a meeting in Baltimore which was an
attempt to reconcile the existing difficulties. According to Farrar,
Osler stated that “so long as Barton remained at the head of the Red
Cross, no effective policy of cooperation could be established.” A
contemporary review in the Chicago Tribune paints a rather different
picture of the author, noting that “Miss Barton writes in a simple,
graphic style that makes her pictures of the disasters she witnessed a
lurid background for the work of relief she directed. The Red Cross is
her memorial, but this book will bring the public into personal touch
with this gentle old lady.”

45. THORNDIKE, Russell. The Further Adventures Of Doctor Syn.
London: Rich & Cowan, (1916). First edition. A fine copy in the
pictorial dustwrapper designed by E.A. Cox which has some light
soiling with minor chipping to the spine ends, the upper corner of the
front panel is chipped away, and the rear panel has had professional
restoration work. At some point the top third of the rear panel was
torn and folded down; it has been reinforced on the inside by a large
of archival paper (approx. 4” X 8”) and therefore there is a closed
tear on the rear panel and spine. The dustwrapper is still very good.

A. The TRUE and GENUIN ELEGY OF Matthew Gun Bookseller
Printed by Will Rueter at the Aliquando Press in 2014. 1 of 125
copies. 15" x 10 1/2". Printed on Hahnemuble white mould paper in
Garamond, ATF Baskerville and XIV Century Roman. This is a reprint of
an early 18th-century broadside. The original is held by the British
Library and we have been unable to locate another copy. We felt this
reprint to be a timely one given the precarious state of the book
trade these days; Gun’s lament resonates strongly. A fine work by one
of Canada’s foremost designers and private printers.

The Pope's
Bookbinder
A Memoir
By David Mason |
|
|
Biblioasis, 2013.
420 pages. Illustrated.
$37.95(CAD).
A memoir of Mason’s forty-five years in the booktrade. After some
years in Europe doing odd jobs, including a period doing bookbinding
in Spain, and reading incessantly, Mason returned to Canada,
apprenticed in the book trade with Joseph Patrick Books and has been
selling used and rare books ever since. His memories include the books
dealers, collectors, and libraries he has dealt with over that period.
“For anyone who loves books too well – who lusts after them, lives
in them, mainlines them – David Mason’s memoir will be a fix from
heaven. Heartful, cantankerous, droll, his tales of honour and
obsession in the trade gratify the very book-love they portray. An
irresistible read.”
– Dennis Lee
“Entertaining, moving, informative, intelligently hopeful: I know
of few other books like this one to warm the cockles of a booklover’s
heart.”
– Alberto Manguel
