5. (Calendar/Pollyanna). Pollyana Calendar The Glad Book 1915.
Boston: The Page Company, (1914). 4to., (12" x 8"), glossy pictorial wrappers, tied at the top, with 52 leaves printed in colour (illustrated)--one for each week of the year, with a quotation from ‘Pollyanna.' Lacking one tie o/w a very good copy of this Pollyanna themed calendar. The calendars were issued annually for a number of years, advertised as having a ‘message of cheer on every page' and ‘beautifully illustrated.'

6. (Calendar). (MICKLE, Sara & Mary Agnes Fitzibbon--compilers). The Cabot Calendar 1497-1897. [With Drawings by M. Cary McConnell and Clara Fitz Gearld].
(Toronto: Toronto Litho. Co., 1896.) A lithographed calendar measuring 7" X 9 3/4." The calendar consists of 4 lithographed portraits of Champlain, Frontenac, Wolfe and Monck, and 12 lithographed pages (1 for each month), the month of December comprises the last leaf and the first leaf is a lithographed cover reading "The Cabot Calendar....." The calendar is fastened together with the original cord which passes through two holes at the top of each page. The pages are printed on the rectos only. There is a small stain on the front cover approx. 1/2" X 3" and a corresponding stain on the outside of the last leaf but there are no stains within. The calendar is housed in the original printed slipcase/envelope which is stiff paper with printed and decoration on the front. The calendar is near fine and the envelope is very good. We have been unable to locate a copy of the calendar with the envelope present, though a few Canadian institutions do hold copies of the calendar itself.

7. (Canadian Poetry Journals)
A collection of Canadian poetry journals from the early years of a golden era in Canadian verse. This entire lot of scarce periodicals came from the library of Robert Weaver, who could arguably be referred to as the prime patron of modern Canadian writing. Weaver worked for the CBC producing radio programs on literature and provided many of the most important modern Canadian writers with the money to feed their families by buying their poetry and short stories to be broadcast on the CBC. Because the earliest issues are quite rare and First Statement and Northern Review are scarce we are offering these incomplete runs as lots.

An Unrecorded Robertson's Landmarks of Toronto

9. (Canadiana) ROBERTSON, J. Ross. Robertson's Landmarks of Toronto. A Collection of Historical Sketches of the Old Town of York From 1792 until 1833 and of Toronto from 1834 to 1893.
Toronto: J. Ross Robertson, 1894. Volume 1. Tall thick 8vo., wrappers, 561pp. With illustrations. In original gray wrappers printed in black, the front wrapper duplicating the title page, the rear wrapper blank, the spine reading “Robertson's Landmarks of Toronto. Volume 1.” The edges of the wrappers are chipped (not affecting the text) and large pieces are chipped from the spine losing a fair bit of the lettering. The spine is vertically cracked in several places and has been lacquered at some point, obviously to stop further chipping. A most curious example. This book was issued in 1894, both in red and blue cloth. The entire series in six volumes, completed in 1914, is the best record of early Toronto compiled by the owner and editor of the Toronto Telegram, John Ross Robertson. The publishing record of the six volume set is complex because each volume seems to have been printed according to the sales success of the previous volume. Therefore, the print runs differed. This copy in original wrappers is a mystery. In the fifty years since I began, including my apprenticeship at Joseph Patrick Books I have seen no other copy in wrappers. It is impossible to ascertain why it was done. We can locate no copy in any record. Perhaps it was a trial binding or perhaps an early example of a review copy. Aside from the chipping and damaging it is in very good interior state. The vertical cracks in the spine denote considerable use; perhaps it was a working copy for the Telegram or for Robertson's personal use. In the absence of any other copy or record it is impossible to ascertain. Very rare, unrecorded, perhaps unique.

Inner front hinge cracked, some rubbing to the spine ends, small hole in rear spine gutter otherwise a better than very good but not near fine copy. "William Booth started life as a pawnbroker's assistant in Nottingham. After coming to London in 1849 he became an itinerant revivalist preacher. In 1865 he started a "Christian Mission" in Whitechapel. In 1878 he founded almost by accident the Salvation Army. His passionate preoccupation with the submerged tenth was not confined to their spiritual welfare; he was determined to relieve their physical misery as well. In 1890, the same year that Stanley published In Darkest Africa, Booth published In Darkest England. In this book, he analyzed the causes of pauperism and vice of the period, and proposed a remedy by ten expedients. These included land settlement, emigration, rescue work among prostitutes and at the prison-gate, the poor man's bank, and the poor man's lawyer. Money was liberally subscribed and a large part of the scheme was carried out..."

First edition. 4to., recently rebound with a calf spine, marble boards, raised bands, leather spine label, (1), (1), (4), 168pp. Name on the titlepage, repair to initial imprimatur page otherwise fine. Henry Wharton (1664-1695) was a deacon and prolific ecclesiastical historian. “In 1688 he made the acquaintance of the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Sancroft, under whose generous patronage some of his literary work was done. The arch-bishop, who had a very high opinion of Wharton's character and talents, made him one of his chaplains and presented him to the Kentish living of Sundridge, and afterward to that of Chartham in the same county. In 1689 he took the oath of allegiance to William and Mary, but he wrote a severe criticism of Bishop Burnet's History of the Reformation, and it was partly owing to the Bishop's hostility that he did not obtain further preferment in the English church. He died on the 5th of March, 1695, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. (Ency. Britannica, 11th edition). Wing W1570.

30 . (MANLEY, Delarivier). Secret Memoirs and Manners of Several Persons of Quality, of Both Sexes. From the New Atlantis an Island in the Mediterranean.
London: Printed for John Morphew… and J. Woodward, 1709. In two volumes. Second edition. 8vo., full cont. calf, raised bands, with more recent leather labels, vi, (2), 246; (12), 272pp. Extremities rubbed with some wear to corners, 2” crack along the upper hinge of volume one, still a near fine set. Delarivier Manley (1670?-1724) was a playwright, journalist, and writer of political fiction. In her time, Manley was a notorious character known for her scandalous past (a cousin seduced her into a bigamous marriage), her sensational writing (ranging from the aggressively political to the erotic), and her appearance (she was badly scarred from a bout of smallpox in her youth and known for being overweight). Manley should be included when discussing the central political and literary circles of the time: friends with Jonathan Swift as well as his successor as editor of The Examiner, satirized by Alexander Pope in The Rape of the Lock, and now usually mentioned alongside Aphra Behn and Eliza Haywood as “the fair triumvirate of wit.” New Atlantis, the title she is best known for, was published anonymously and claims on its title to have been originally written in Italian. “Later critics read it as pornographic; still later critics co-opted it into the development of the novel; but that is not how its author or its original readers understood it. It is political scandal fiction (what was developed first in France as 'chronique scandaleuse'), with elements both of allegory and of propaganda.” Specifically, it was a pointed anti-Whig satire “crammed with offensive personal attacks on individuals (women as well as men); most though not all of them pertain to the misuse of political or sexual power.” The publication resulted in her arrest, as well as the arrest of the two publishers, and the printer; Swift later supported an application to Lord Peterborough for a reward for her service to the Tory cause in the writing of New Atlantis.

Psychological Warfare Division Scrapbook

31. (Military) WWII Scrapbook of the Allies in France. Psychological Warfare Division, “Public Address Units” (American), 1944-1945.
4to., scrapbook, leatherette spine, grey cloth boards, no pagination (144 pages, over half are used). 16 newspaper articles (13 clippings and 3 proofs), 3 original typescript internal reports, 1 typescript article, 35 original photographs, 3 pieces of theatre/event ephemera, two journal (?) articles, and a large folding blueprint map of a French farm. Almost certainly compiled by Howard Crosby Rice (from the Broadcasting Division of the Office of War Information), as his name appears on multiple clippings and documents. A fascinating archive that documents how the Allies curated their public image and contributed to communities in and around Cherbourg during the closing year of WWII. Included are many clippings and proofs about Americans in France, from war reporting to public interest stories. Articles are in French and English, and are from publications including Le Monde Illustré, La Nouvelle Republique, and the New York Herald Tribune. The internal documents appear to be original, perhaps Rice's personal copies as they contain corrections. They concern activities of Public Address cars, and “News from Children” (the delivery of letters from evacuated children to their families). Photos primarily depict officers interacting with French locals in the Cherbourg area, and activities of the PA cars. Some of the photographs include typed descriptions with the concluding line “CERTIFIED AS PASSED BY THE SHAEF CENSOR”, others have information handwritten on the reverse (the photos are held in with photo corners and are easily removed, none appear to be missing). Some of the most interesting photos show the aftermath of an American plane crash in 1942, including part of the wreckage and modest funeral procession being guarded by the Germans—Rice's notes appear on some of the photographs and an article proof telling the story of the funeral, as well as a clipping of the final printed article, are also present. Ephemera includes a programme and ticket for Bastille Day celebrations in Cherbourg in 1944, and the programme for a musical performance by the 35th Special Service Company. Journal articles titled “The Ferry at Langeais” and “A Farm in Champagne” appear to be from the same unidentified publication. Howard C. Rice (1904-1980) was an American academic who primarily studied Franco-American relations, and spent several years towards the end of his career as assistant librarian for Rare Books and Special Collections at Princeton.

Worcester, Mass: The Geo. C. Whitney Co., (1922?) 4to., wrappers, (40)pp. Catalogue contains 81 sample valentines, approximately 25 cards are missing. Cards in very good to fine condition, light wear to extremities, very good overall. The George C. Whitney Company was in operation from 1888 to 1942, and was one of the finest producers of American valentines and greeting cards of the period (George Whitney himself trained under Esther Howland, the most famous designer of American valentines of the 19th century). This sample book represents the later work of the company, though there are a number of examples of the highly ornate, three dimensional cards that made the company famous. A beautiful sample catalogue, representing a wide range of popular design of the period.

Someone has replicated the autograph-style font and written in ink on the first page of text “All life (on earth) is breath All else (on earth) is death”, name, top corner of upper wrapper chipped, otherwise about near fine. On the dangers of mouth-breathing, by the American painter known for his depiction of Native Americans in the Old West. Catlin observes the health and strength of Native North Americans and attributes the ill-health of Europeans to the habit of mouth-breathing while asleep. Later published as Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life.

Cyrus Peirce [1790-1860] American educator, Unitarian minister, and founding president of the first American normal school (now Framingham State University) in Lexington, MA. In 1853 the American Institute of Instruction awarded Peirce their ‘essay prize' for the above title in which he argued that ‘secular instruction by itself was no guarantee against crime.' As a result, Peirce came under attack from teachers who believed that he was questioning their moral influence on students.

With two full page tinted engravings “The Maiden Stone, Aberdeenshire" and “Various Ornaments”; with numerous engravings in the text. A bit of foxing on the endpapers, minor rubbing to extremities but in fact a near fine copy. ‘Dr. Wise divides his volume into three books. The first treats the social character of the inhabitants of Caledonia; the second of the History and Tenets of Buddhism; and the third gives an account of the history of Christianity in Pictland. These books are all divided again into chapters, and the letterpress is abundantly illustrated. That Dr. Wise brings a vast amount of learning to bear upon his subject, and that he has spared no pains to make his treatment of it as complete as possible consistently with the thesis he attempts to prove, we need hardly say. The antiquities of Scotland have rarely been treated so elaborately, and perhaps never before has so much learning been used for their elucidation.' (Scottish Review, 1885).

With 29 plates including 4 chromolithographs, and two folding maps (at rear). This copy has been professionally recased with repairs to the spine ends, inner hinges reinforced, some rubbing but certainly a very good copy. Ferguson 11770, Casey Wood 443, Catalogue of the British Museum (Natural History) p.1192. The Norwegian, naturalist, anthropologist and explorer Carl Lumholtz spent four years in Queensland from 1880. First based at Gracemere, he travelled in western Queensland, then to the Valley of Lagoons and finally to the Herbert River area of northern Queensland where he spent long periods travelling, camping and hunting with the Aborigines, in many cases with groups previously untouched by white people. He collected four new species of mammal including Dendrolagus lumholtzii, a Tree Kangaroo, and Pseudocheiris herbertensis, the ù Herbert River Ringtail Possum. His account of his travels, Among Cannibals, contains detailed observations of Aboriginal life. Later he became important as an anthropologist in Mexico and Arizona, then as explorer, naturalist and anthropologist in two yearsÆ travel in Borneo. The Lumholtz National Park in the Herbert River area, including Wallaman Falls; it is a fitting memorial to him. (Queensland Naturalist, 2006).

After some years in Europe doing odd jobs, including a period doing bookbinding in Spain, and reading incessantly, Mason returned to Canada, apprenticed in the book trade with Joseph Patrick Books and has been selling used and rare books ever since. His memories include the books dealers, collectors, and libraries he has dealt with over that period.

The added chapter on the Hemingway / Fitzgerald / Callaghan robbery explains what happened and why the author chose not to put it in the original edition.

This is a reprint of an early 18th-century broadside. The original is held by the British Library and we have been unable to locate another copy. We felt this reprint to be a timely one given the precarious state of the book trade these days; Gun's lament resonates strongly. A fine work by one of Canada's foremost designers and private printers.
