He became chaplain to John Moore, Bishop of Norwich and in 1713 a canon at Ely, 1424 a canon at Christ Church and in 1732 a bishop at St. Asaph. Tanner's chief work was the above title, a short account of all the religious houses in England and Wales, first published in 1695. It was reprinted in the edition above in 1744 with additions by the author's brother, John Tanner.

Tom Taylor [1817-1880] dramatist and editor of "Punch." Although Taylor served as a professor, lawyer and served on the Board of Health, his fame lies elsewhere. Taylor began his career in London as a journalist, writing for the Morning Chronicle and Daily News. He was on the staff of Punch and succeeded Leslie Brooks as its editor in 1874 and remained editor until his death. Taylor found his true vocation as a playwright, and over a thirty five year period he supplied seventy-five plays to London theatres, chiefly, "romantic comedies." He was perhaps the most popular dramatist of the day. The above work contains a history of the square and details about people who have lived there; including the Sidney family, Newton, the Prince of Wales (1717-1760), William Hogarth, Joshua Reynolds, William Criukshank and Charles Bell. ".....while the biographical detail predominates over the topographical element in the book, this is not greatly to be regretted as it allows the author room for a full and lively account of various artists, philosophers, and statesmen, who were inhabitants or lodgers in the Square."
