Anne Manning [1807-1879] was educated at home by her mother, an accomplished scholar who imparted her considerable knowledge (including several languages history and science) to her daughters. Anne began writing to entertain her brothers and sisters, and her first book "A Sisters Gift " was published in 1826. It was with the publication of "The Maiden and Married Life of Mistress Mary Powell" (1849) that brought her widespread notice and she was thereafter known as "the author of Mary Powell." A prolific writer, Manning was "at her best in her historical tales of the sixteenth century. " (DNB).
