John Home Tooke [1736-1812] English politician and philologist, educated Westminster, Eton and St. John's College Cambridge; ordained 1760. Despite his ordination, Home Tooke spent the better part of his life promoting political and parliamentary reform. He began his career with the publication of a pamphlet in 1765 entitled "The Petition of an Englishman" which provided a scathing attack on Lords Bute and Mansfield. He was instrumental in the founding of "The Society for Supporting the Bill of Rights" (1679) and also claimed for the public the right of printing debates in parliament. In 1773 he resigned as a curate and devoted himself to the study of law and philology. Befriended by William Tooke in gratitude for help with legal matters, Home added "Tooke" to his surname. In 1794 as a reaction against the French Republican movement there was a policy of repression in England which led to Tooke's arrest and trial for high treason. After his acquittal he spent his remaining years in retirement, supported by friend. The above work, established Tooke's reputation as a philologist. The first part was originally published in 1786; and in 1798 there was a second edition of Part I, and in 1805 the Second Part was published. The work attracted immediate attention in England and on the Continent. "As a philologist, Home Tooke deserves credit for seeing the necessity of studying Gothic and Anglo-Saxon, and learnt enough to be much in advance of Johnson in that direction...His philology was meant to subserve a characteristic philosophy. Locke, he said, had made a happy mistake when he called his book an essay upon human understanding instead of an essay upon grammar. Tooke was in fact, a thorough nominalist after the fashion of Hobbes… held that every word meant simply a thing; and that reasoning was the art of putting words together. …In this respect Tooke had a great influence on James Mill, who constantly accepts Tooke's philological doctrines in order to confirm his own philosophy." Francois Baron de Tott [1733-1793] son of a Hungarian noble. De Tott served as a lieutenant in the French armay and in 1755 he went to Istanbul as the secretary of the French ambassador Vergennes. However, his real mission was to learn Turkish and observe the condition of the Ottoman Reign and to provide information, particularly about Kirim. After a brief return to Paris and Switzerland in 1766, he was sent out again to Kirim in 1767 as French Consulate to research the region and the rebel Tartars. He was assigned to protect the Canakkale Bogazi against Russia. He followed Humbaraci Ahmend Pasha and attempted to reform the Ottoman army and supervised the building of new castles around the Bosphorus. Despite bickering with the Turks he managed to impart something of western military technique. "Eton asserts Baron Tott's account of Turkey, and of its inhabitants, to be the best and most exact. There are, however, several exaggerations and inaccuracies in the work, as may be easily conceived from the character of the author. The description of the Crimea, and its inhabitants, is, perhaps the most interesting." (Cox).

Company Limited furniture manufacturers. Under the photographs are listed suite or item no., and specifications which may include size, weight, design particulars, and/or materials. The last 24 pages consist of The Chesley Chair Company Limited supplement, with images and descriptions of CCC furniture. The price list for June 1925 is laid in.
