Folio, full contemporary calf, leather spine labels, (8), 904 (in columns, 2 pp. per side of each leaf) , (1), (8)pp; (6), 906 (in columns 2 pp. per side of each leaf), (10)pp. [a2, B-N4, O2, P-2R4, 2S-4G2; A2, B-2X4, 2Y-4E2.] This copy has been rebacked in the 19th century with an earlier leather label laid down on the spine, some minor wear but in fact a near fine copy. Anthony Wood [1632-1695] English antiquary educated at Merton College. He obtained permission to use the Bodleian and then began systematically to copy monumental inscriptions and for antiquities in the city and neighbourhood. The keeper, Dr. John Wallis allowed him access to the University registers in 1660 and this work became the foundation for his later History and Antiquities of Oxford. In 1678 the registers that had been in his for eighteen years were removed, s it was feared that he would be implicated in the Popish plot. During this time he worked on his great work, the above title, published in 1691-92. "Wood's Athenae is an invaluable work, both as respects biography and bibliography...." (Lowndes).

Mary Anne Everett Wood [1818-1895] spent her childhood in a succession of large towns in Lancashire and Yorkshire until she moved to London in 1841. With the aid of the British Museum reading room she embarked systematically upon the work that was to absorb her life,"The Lives of the Princesses of England" and the above "Letters of...." She continued her work after her marriage and the birth of her children. He meticulous work and her skill at deciphering old manuscripts attracted the attention of those at the Museum and it led to her appointment by the Government as clerk in the State Paper Office, the only woman staff member in the department. The above work is a chronological selection of letters and includes not only letters originally written in English but also letters translated from Latin, Italian, Spanish,Norman French and Scotch. Wood has supplied brief introductory remarks to letters when she felt it was necessary. "Comparatively few of the letters have been published previously, and those which have been printed have appeared only in works which are scarce or beyond ordinary reach." An interesting collection.
