BLAKHAL, Gilbert.
A Brieffe Narration of the Services Done To Three Noble Ladyes, ......MDCXXXI- MDCXLIX. Aberdeen: Printed for the Spalding Club, 1844. 4to., orig. green cloth, xlii, 224pp. Name, inner hinge starting, some very occasional foxing, gilt lettering on the spine a bit rubbed but in fact near fine. Not much is known about Blakhal. He was part of the Roman Catholic Mission in Scotland. "The narrative of Father Blakhal is, on the whole, a considerable addition to our history of the eventful times during which he lived. The intercourse which he held with persons of all ranks and professions, princes and peasants, ....in such stirring times could not fail at attending an interesting subject. Many little pictures of the manners and state of society in Scotland and France will be found scattered throughout the narration...." "The volume has been printed from the original mss. (in the author's hand)." The work is divided into three main sections: "Of Ladye Isabelle Hay, daughter to Francis Hay, Earle of Errolle, and Heritage Constable of Scotland," II: "Of the Services Done to Sophia, Countess of Aboyne by Gilbert Blakhal," III: "The Good Offices Donne to Madame De Gordon, ... By Gilbert Blakhal."
