DODINGTON, George Bubb. The Diary of the late George Bubb Dodington, Baron of Melcombe Regis....With An Appendix Containing Some Curious and Interesting Papersl....By Henry Penruddocke Wyndham. Salisbury: Printed and Sold by E. Easton..... 1784. A New Edition. 8vo., full contemporary calf rebacked with a new spine, leather label, (xvi), 506pp. Rebacked o/w a near fine copy. George Bubb Dodinton [1691-1762] writer and politician. Dodington's polictical influence was considerable and he found himself embroiled in the political controversies of the day, with other politicians of note, such as Pitt, Argyll, Halifax and Henry Pelham. Dodington served as a patron for various writers as well as writing some verse himself. On his death, his papers were left in the card of his nephew, Henry Wyndham, who published the diary in 1784. "It is the most curious illustration in existence of the character of the servile place hunters of the day, with unctuous professionals of virtuous sentiments which serve to heighton the effect. It contains much curious historical information especially of the Prince and Princess of Wales during the period 1749-60."
