After finding herself trapped in a provincial marriage with the petty bourgeois Lafarge, the semi-aristocratic Parisienne apparently became desperate after she found he was embroiled in debt and refused to release her from her contract. In her memoirs she describes her extreme anxiety as she warded off episodes of near rape in her sexual relationship with her husband. In December 1839 she sent him a poisoned cake while he was in Paris. After he developed cholera like symptoms and returned home she continued to hover over his sickbed, lacing his food with arsenic.
