Charles MacLean (1788-1824) English medical and political writer. MacLean joined the East India Company and made several voyages to India where he settled and took charge of a hospital in Calcutta. Ordered to leave India he returned to Europe where he travelled to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Paris to advocate the establishment of an international institution for the study and treatment of plague. He was detained and held prisoner by Napoleon in 1803 until he could prove that he had not been in England for the past ten years. His experience in Europe, including his detainment are outlined in the above work.
