Sarah Hall Boardman Judson [1803-1845] missionary to Burma. Her missionary work was encouraged by a meeting with the wife of Adoniram Judson, the pioneer American missionary to Burma. She married George Boardman (1825) who was preparing himself for a missionary career in Burma. After being delayed a year in Calcutta, they reached Burma in 1827, settling in Moulmein, a British military garrison. Moving out from Moulmaein, the Boardmans established themselves at Tavoy where they established schools and boarding schools that became the foundation of an indigenous church in Burma. The years 1829-1831 were hard ones with the deaths of two of their children, illness and an anti-British revolt that forced them to return to Moulmein but George Boardman's health declined and he died in 1831. Sarah Boardman continued her husbands work under the guidance of Adoniram Judson; and she continued to work with the jungle people, the Karens. Eventually Judson (whose wife had also died) and Boardman married and for the next 11 years worked in Burma as missionaries, with Sarah becoming expert in Burmese and translating several works into the language.
