Sheil wrote a few plays which were produced successfully. Sheil was one of the principal founders of the Catholic Association in 1823 and drew up a petition regarding the administration of laws in Ireland which was presented in both houses of Parliament. Sheil was a supporter of O'Connell's demands for Catholic emancipation and sat in Parliament for Louth.
