The Life and Death of Lord Edward Fitzgerald.

Lord Edward Fitzgerald (1763-1798) soldier and Irish nationalist, served with the military and foreign service. In 1781 he was stationed in Charleston but he was wounded and returned to Ireland for a short time. When he returned to his regiment (as a Major) he was posted in New Brunswick. Of an adventurous spirit, Fitzgerald set off on foot using a compass and made his way from Fredericton to Quebec. (an account of his journey and other Canadian experiences is documented in the above work pp. 74-145.) From Quebec he travelled to Detroit and from there down the Mississippi to New Orleans. On his return to Ireland, Fitzgerald became embroiled in politics, particularly the movement for Irish independence. Fitzgerald espoused support for the doctrines of the French Revolution and his denouncement of all hereditary titles, including his own, led to his dismissal from the army. Taking his set in the House of Commons he was expelled for advocating the aims of the Society of United Irishmen; an independent Ireland. In 1796 he joined their ranks and supported the attempts of Wolfe Tone to obtain French support for an insurrection. Fitzgerald provided advice on military strategy and advocated radical and violent means, such as the mass assassination of Irish Peers. However, the rebels were victims of an informer and Fitzgerald was eventually shot and arrested by the British. He died of his wounds in prison. (11th Brit., DNB).

Moorhouse spent thee months in the Northwest Frontier area of northern Pakistan, including walking from Chitral to Gilgit. As before, Morrhouse combines adventure with an excellent writing style which educates the reader about the history, politics and culture of the area while remaining entertaining.

Hannah More [1745-1833] poet and dramatist. Educated at home, More then started conducting classes for working class women at night and Sunday. She eventually moved to London where she joined the society of the "Bluestockings" and other literary groups which included such people as Elizabeth Montagu, Johnson, Burke, Gibbon, DeQuincy and Walpole. A successful writer, she devoted some of her work to issues affecting women and believed "the chief end to be proposed in cultivating the understanding of women is to qualify them for practical purposes in life." The above collection of letters includes correspondence with the leading literary figures of the time.
