Lady Sydney Morgan [1776-1859] novelist and Irish nationalist. Well versed in Irish literature and legends, Morgan decided to write and publish "Poems" in 1803 and then published a novel, "St. Clair" in 1804. They were quite successful and she was taken up by society. Her feminist approach manifested itself in "Novice of St. Dominick" an historical novel whose heroine crosses France, attacking religious and political oppression. "The Missionary" (1811) set in India, inspired Byron, Shelley and Moore. Several of her novels deal with the oppression in Ireland and they elicited both praise and violent attacks. Her travel accounts "Italy" (1821) and "France" (1817) created an uproar. Capitalizing on her popularity or infamy, Morgan continued her assaults on reactionary regimes with the above title.
